Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga — Temple Guide and Travel Tips
Omkareshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva, located on Mandhata island in the Narmada river in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh. The island is naturally shaped like the Hindu sacred symbol Om, which gives the place its name.
The Two Main Temples
The Omkareshwar temple complex has two main Shiva shrines:
- Omkareshwar Temple: Located on the island, this houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple has a beautiful Nagara-style architecture with intricate carvings on the outer walls.
- Amareshwar Temple (Mamleshwar): Located on the south bank of the Narmada on the mainland. Some traditions consider this as the actual Jyotirlinga, while others recognise both.
To cover both temples, plan for at least 3-4 hours including the parikrama.
Island Parikrama
The parikrama (circumambulation) of Mandhata island is considered an important part of the Omkareshwar pilgrimage. The full parikrama is approximately 7 km and takes 2-3 hours on foot. The path passes through several smaller temples, caves, and scenic viewpoints along the Narmada.
Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes. The path is uneven in places. Carry water, especially in summer. Early morning is the best time to start.
Darshan Timings
- Summer: 5 AM to 9 PM
- Winter: 5:30 AM to 8:30 PM
- Afternoon break: 12 PM to 1 PM (temple closes briefly)
Aarti timings: Morning at 5:30 AM, afternoon at 12 PM, evening at 7:30 PM. The evening aarti on the Narmada bank is particularly beautiful.
Narmada Parikrama
Omkareshwar sits on the Narmada, India's fifth-longest river and one of the seven holy rivers. The Narmada Parikrama — walking the entire length of the river and back — is one of the great pilgrimage walks of India. Many devotees begin or end at Omkareshwar.

Best Time to Visit
October to March offers the most comfortable weather. Mahashivratri (February-March) and Kartik Purnima are the most auspicious times. Monsoon (July-September) makes the Narmada spectacular but the parikrama path can be slippery.
