Maheshwar — Ahilya Fort, Narmada Ghats and Handloom Heritage

February 09, 2026 3 min read

Maheshwar is a small town on the north bank of the Narmada river in Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh. Once the capital of the Malwa region under Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, it remains one of the most picturesque and culturally rich towns in central India.

Ahilya Fort

The iconic Ahilya Fort sits on the banks of the Narmada, its walls rising directly from the river. Built and restored by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century, the fort complex includes temples, courtyards, and a heritage hotel. The view of the Narmada from the fort ramparts is one of the most photographed scenes in Madhya Pradesh.

Part of the fort is now the Ahilya Fort Heritage Hotel, one of India's most celebrated heritage stays. Even if you are not staying, the fort complex is open to visitors.

The Narmada Ghats

Maheshwar's ghats are the town's soul. The stone steps descend to the Narmada, lined with small temples and cenotaphs. The morning and evening light on the ghats is extraordinary. Boat rides on the Narmada offer views of the fort and ghats from the water.

The ghats are quieter than Varanasi or Ujjain, making them ideal for contemplation. The evening aarti, while modest, is intimate and moving.

Rani Ahilyabai Holkar

Maheshwar's identity is inseparable from Rani Ahilyabai Holkar (1725-1795), one of India's most revered rulers. She made Maheshwar her capital and is remembered for building temples, ghats, and public works across India. Her administration was known for justice, efficiency, and religious tolerance. A statue of the queen overlooks the ghats.

Maheshwari Sarees

Maheshwar has a centuries-old handloom tradition. Maheshwari sarees, with their distinctive checks and borders, are woven by local artisans using techniques passed down through generations. The Rehwa Society, a weaver's cooperative, has a workshop and showroom near the fort where you can watch sarees being woven on traditional looms and buy directly from the weavers.

Temples

  • Kaleshwar Temple: Ancient Shiva temple within the fort complex
  • Rajarajeshwar Temple: Built by Rani Ahilyabai, located on the ghats
  • Ek Mukhi Datta Temple: Peaceful temple near the river
  • Sahasrarjun Temple: Dedicated to the mythical king Sahasrarjun (Kartavirya Arjuna), who ruled from Maheshwar (ancient Mahishmati)

Maheshwar in Mythology

Maheshwar is identified with ancient Mahishmati, the legendary capital of King Kartavirya Arjuna (Sahasrarjun). References to Mahishmati appear in the Mahabharata and Ramayana, making Maheshwar one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in India.

How to Reach Maheshwar

Maheshwar is 90 km from Indore (2.5 hours), 40 km from Omkareshwar (1 hour), and 140 km from Ujjain. The town has no railway station — road is the only practical option. TaxiGo offers cab service to Maheshwar, often combined with Omkareshwar in a single-day Narmada circuit trip.
