The island holds two of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines: Omkareshwar (on the island) and Amareshwar (on the south bank). The 7 km island parikrama passes through 68 smaller temples and takes 2-3 hours on foot.
Located in Khandwa district near the Omkareshwar Dam on the Narmada, the town is a key stop on the Narmada Parikrama circuit. The approach road from Indore passes through Sanawad and includes scenic ghat sections for the last 15 km. Maheshwar - home to Ahilya Fort and the famous Maheshwari handloom sarees - is just 40 km downstream on the Narmada.
