Best Road Trips from Indore — Weekend Getaways and Day Trips

February 13, 2026 3 min read

Indore sits at the heart of the Malwa plateau in western Madhya Pradesh, making it an ideal base for road trips. With good highways radiating in every direction, you can reach ancient temples, hill forts, waterfalls, and wildlife sanctuaries within a few hours. Here are the best road trips from Indore.

1. Mandu (Mandav) — 100 km, 2.5 hours

The ruined Afghan city of Mandu sits on a 20 sq km hilltop plateau with dramatic cliff edges. The Jahaz Mahal (Ship Palace) floating between two lakes, Hindola Mahal (Swinging Palace), Rani Roopmati's Pavilion with Narmada valley views, and the massive Jami Masjid are the highlights. Mandu is atmospheric in the monsoon when the ruins are draped in green and the lakes fill up.

Best time: July to October (monsoon) or October to March (winter)

2. Omkareshwar — 80 km, 2 hours

One of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples on a sacred island in the Narmada. The temple, island parikrama, and river views make this a deeply rewarding trip. Often combined with Maheshwar (40 km further) for a full-day Narmada circuit.

Best for: Pilgrimage, photography, river views

3. Maheshwar — 90 km, 2.5 hours

The former capital of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar on the Narmada river. Ahilya Fort rising from the water, peaceful ghats, handloom saree workshops, and a sense of timeless calm. One of the most photogenic towns in Madhya Pradesh.

Best for: History, handlooms, river ghats, photography

4. Ujjain — 55 km, 1.5 hours

One of India's seven sacred cities, home to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. The Bhasma Aarti at dawn, Kal Bhairav temple, Ram Ghat on the Shipra, and the ancient observatory make Ujjain essential. The shortest and most popular road trip from Indore.

Best for: Pilgrimage, history, culture

5. Patalpani and Tincha Falls — 36 km, 1 hour

Two stunning waterfalls near Mhow, south of Indore. Patalpani drops 300 feet into a gorge; Tincha is equally dramatic but less crowded. Best visited during and after the monsoon (July-October). The drive through the Vindhya foothills is scenic.

Best for: Nature, trekking, monsoon outings

6. Pachmarhi — 360 km, 7 hours

Madhya Pradesh's only hill station, nestled in the Satpura range at 1,100 metres. Bee Falls, Pandava Caves, Jata Shankar, Dhoopgarh (highest point in MP), and dense sal forests. Pachmarhi deserves at least 2 nights. The long drive is best split with a stop at Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram).

Best for: Hill station, trekking, nature, weekend getaway (2-3 days)

7. Udaipur — 270 km, 4.5 hours

Cross the Rajasthan border for the City of Lakes. City Palace, Lake Pichola, Jag Mandir, and the old city's narrow lanes filled with art galleries and cafes. The Indore-Udaipur highway is well-maintained, making this a comfortable drive.

Best for: Royalty, lakes, architecture, dining

8. Burhanpur — 175 km, 3.5 hours

A lesser-known Mughal city on the banks of the Tapti river. Burhanpur was where Shah Jahan's wife Mumtaz Mahal passed away, inspiring the Taj Mahal. The Shahi Qila, Jama Masjid, and underground water system (Hammam) are worth exploring. Asirgarh Fort (20 km further) is the "Gateway to the Deccan."

Best for: Mughal history, offbeat travel
