Madhya Pradesh Jyotirlinga Circuit — Omkareshwar and Mahakaleshwar

February 11, 2026 2 min read

Madhya Pradesh is uniquely blessed with two of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples of Lord Shiva — Omkareshwar in Khandwa district and Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain. Both are accessible from Indore, making the MP Jyotirlinga circuit one of the most popular pilgrimage routes in central India.

The Two Jyotirlingas

Omkareshwar

Located on Mandhata island in the Narmada river, 80 km from Indore. The island is shaped like the sacred Om symbol. The temple houses a Swayambhu (self-manifested) Jyotirlinga. The island parikrama (7 km) is an important part of the visit.

Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain)

One of the most revered Shiva temples in India, located in the ancient city of Ujjain, 55 km from Indore. The Jyotirlinga here is the only south-facing (Dakshinamurti) Jyotirlinga among the 12. The Bhasma Aarti at dawn is the highlight.

Suggested 2-Day Itinerary from Indore

Day 1: Indore → Omkareshwar → Maheshwar

  • 6:00 AM: Depart Indore
  • 8:00 AM: Arrive Omkareshwar. Darshan at Omkareshwar and Amareshwar temples

One-Day Express Option

If you have limited time, you can cover both Jyotirlingas in a single long day:
